The ABC’s Of Foot Pain

Once I gathered myself I drove straight to the hospital where the surgery was performed, and requested my x rays. Upon review of them, it appeared that the Doctor did a great job in the surgery. It was aligned perfectly, and beautiful. So something indeed changed from that time, until the next x ray that revealed the bone had shifted. I’ve been putting vitamin E on my incision area since the stitches came out because it was so dry that it would rip when I’d do the toe exercises I was told to do.

Of the 26 bones in the foot, 15 are in the toes. A broken toe should be evaluated by a physician to determine whether any of the long bones, called metatarsals, are involved. Any of the bones in the toe, no matter how tiny, can suffer a fracture, typically when they are stubbed or when something heavy is dropped on them. Bunions are readily apparent – the prominence is visible at the base of the big toe or side of the foot. However, to fully evaluate the condition, the foot and ankle surgeon may take x-rays to determine the degree of the deformity and assess the changes that have occurred.

Apart from the bones, the changes concern foot ligaments, tendons, joint capsules and bursae. Hallux valgus ailment causes a great discomfort. Paracetamol and other anti-inflammatory drugs are mostly recommended for intake as they really help in stopping the pain and swelling. However, these are only temporary relief, which cannot correct nor prevent the condition from worsening. It is important to consult an expert physician for proper treatment recommendation because, when left untreated Bunion ( Hallux Valgus ) will keep on worsening and causing pain to the person. the intermetatarsal angle, that is between the first and second metatarsals (the bones that lead up to the base of the toes). If this angle exceeds 9º (the angle found in the healthy foot) it is abnormal and referred to as metatarsus primus varus.

A bunion is a painful swelling of the small fluid-filled sac at the base of the hallux valgus or big toe, leading to the enlargement and protrusion of the joint. Structural bunions occur when the metatarsophalangeal joint between the metatarsal bones of the foot and the proximal bones of the toes enlarges and thickens. Over time this imbalance in the joint can lead to arthritis. The surgical procedures for the repair of hallux valgus can include resecting the bunion, re-aligning the bones of the toe into their proper positions or improving the muscle balance between the intrinsic and extrinsic toe muscles, according to Georgetown University Hospital.

Unfortunately in some cases the symptoms and deformity progress rapidly. When walking, pain can be present in the forefoot at the moment you are pushing off the toes when they are bending. Foot Orthotics – Gives support and relief in many cases and is helpful with providing an arch for flat feet The main objective in the care and treatment of a bunion is relief from the pain. It will take about eight weeks before the bones and soft tissues are well healed. You may be placed in a wooden-soled shoe or a cast during this period to protect the bones while they heal. You will probably need crutches briefly after surgery, and a physical therapist may be consulted to help you use your crutches. You will probably wear a bandage or dressing for about a week following the procedure. The stitches are generally removed in 10 to 14 days. However, if your surgeon chose to use sutures that dissolve, you won’t need to have the stitches taken out.
